  7. INFORMATION:   This is a letter from the IMSP group.  The letter was 
  8.                dated January 10, 1990.

  14. PROBLEM:       A bug was identified with BIOS revisions 2.1 and 2.2 of 
  15.                the WD1007A and 1.51 of the WD1007V when installing 
  16.                Novell NetWare 286.  This problem has been corrected 
  17.                in revision 2.3 of the 7A and revision 2.2 of the 7V.  
  18.                This does not mean that earlier versions of the BIOS 
  19.                will not work with Novell.  However one should be aware 
  20.                of the danger when installing a second drive or entering 
  21.                the BIOS after the Novell installation is complete.

  23.                During the BIOS installation routines, a Novell compatible 
  24.                bad block list is created.  A signature is placed in 
  25.                sector 16 of the boot track to notify the Novell 
  26.                installation software that a bad block list exists.  
  27.                This change was made to alleviate a bug in the Novell 
  28.                COMPSURF utility that would cause it to fail when 14 
  29.                errors are encountered (not previously marked in the 
  30.                Novell bad block list).  By identifying most of the media 
  31.                defects during the BIOS installation the COMPSURF should 
  32.                pass without the end user having to restart it every 14 
  33.                errors.

  35.                The problem with the earlier versions of the BIOS is that 
  36.                after the Novell installation is complete, sector 16 of 
  37.                the BOOT track is used for file allocation.  When the 
  38.                BIOS is entered to install a second drive, upon exiting, 
  39.                it would rewrite the signature of the first drive and 
  40.                corrupt the Novell partition!
  41.  
  42. SOLUTION:      To correct this problem the new BIOS will only write the 
  43.                Novell signature if a low level format has been run 
  44.                during the current BIOS session.  This implies that the 
  45.                defect list should be entered and/or the Surface Analysis 
  46.                run before exiting the BIOS.  If you exit the BIOS then go
  47.                back to the BIOS and run the Surface Analysis, it will 
  48.                place test patterns over the Novell information.

  50.                The following steps should be taken when installing 
  51.                Novell NetWare on a two drive installation with earlier 
  52.                versions of the BIOS.

  54.                Solution 1
  55.        
  56.                When configuring a new Novell installation for 2 drives:
  57.  
  58.                1) Low level format drive 0.
  59.                2) Enter the drive manufacturer defect list for drive 0 
  60.                   (and/or surface verify)
  61.                3) Low level format drive 1
  62.                4) repeat step 2 for drive 1
  63.                5) set drive types and exit.

  65.                Solution 2
  66.  
  67.                When adding a new drive to an existing Novell installation
  68.        
  69.                1) Disconnect the existing Novell drive first
  70.                2) Connect the new drive as in a single drive configuration.
  71.                3) low level format
  72.                4) enter the drive manufacturers defect list for drive 0 
  73.                   (and/or surface verify)
  74.                5) Set drive type and exit.
  75.                6) Power down and install the original drive as drive 0 and
  76.                   the new drive as drive 1
  77.                7) Boot the system Setup utility
  78.                8) Set both drives to TYPE 1
  79.                9) Continue with the normal NetWare installation
